È più facile capire la configurazione e la valenza degli elettroni se puoi effettivamente vedere gli elettroni che circondano gli atomi. Per questo, abbiamo diagrammi a conchiglia elettronica.
Ecco i diagrammi atomici del guscio elettronico per gli elementi, ordinati per numero atomico crescente.
Per ogni diagramma atomico del guscio elettronico, il simbolo dell'elemento è elencato nel nucleo. Vengono mostrati i gusci degli elettroni, che si muovono verso l'esterno dal nucleo. L'anello o il guscio finale di elettroni contiene il numero tipico di elettroni di valenza per un atomo di quell'elemento. Il numero atomico e il nome dell'elemento sono elencati in alto a sinistra. Il lato in alto a destra mostra il numero di elettroni in un atomo neutro. Ricorda, un atomo neutro contiene lo stesso numero di protoni ed elettroni.
L'isotopo è definito dal numero di neutroni in un atomo, che potrebbe essere uguale al numero di protoni, oppure no.
Uno ione di un atomo è quello in cui il numero di protoni ed elettroni non è lo stesso. Se ci sono più protoni che elettroni, uno ione atomico ha una carica positiva ed è chiamato catione. Se ci sono più elettroni che protoni, lo ione ha una carica negativa ed è chiamato anione.
Gli elementi sono mostrati dal numero atomico 1 (idrogeno) fino a 94 (plutonio). Tuttavia, è facile determinare la configurazione degli elettroni per elementi più pesanti creando un grafico.

Il litio è il primo elemento in cui viene aggiunto un ulteriore guscio di elettroni. Ricorda, gli elettroni di valenza si trovano nel guscio più esterno. Il riempimento dei gusci elettronici dipende dal loro orbitale. Il primo orbitale (un orbitale) può contenere solo due elettroni.
